Overview

Half Moon Bay Wall rises nearly directly offshore from the beach at West End, where a shallow reef beginning at around 15 feet gives way to a beautiful semicircular wall plunging past 150 feet into the blue. A tunnel at 60 feet opens onto the wall face at 70 feet, and this passage is arguably the best place on Roatan to encounter eagle rays gliding along the drop-off. The wall is draped in gorgonians and orange elephant ear sponges, with flamingo tongue snails clinging to the sea fans. Grouper patrol the reef crest while blue chromis and creole wrasse swirl above the wall edge. Multiple moorings serve this site, making it accessible to divers of all levels who want a taste of Roatan’s signature wall diving without a long boat ride.

Marine Life

Hawksbill turtles routinely graze the orange elephant-ear sponges and black coral on the wall face, and a tunnel further along the reef is one of Roatan’s most reliable spots for eagle ray encounters. Moray eels and lobsters occupy the wall crevices, spotted drums and juvenile filefish shelter in the shallower nursery areas, and large barracuda frequently hang stationary in the blue at the drop-off edge.
