Peter’s Place

A well-structured wall dive on the south side of Roatán, with a coral-rich reef top and a vertical face decorated with large sea fans and sponge formations.

Overview

Peter’s Place is a wall dive site on the southern side of Roatán, positioned along the same reef system as Mary’s Place and West End Wall. The site features a shallow coral plateau at 8–10 meters transitioning to a vertical wall descending to 24 meters and beyond. The site is named for one of Roatán’s early diving personalities and has been a standard fixture on Roatán dive itineraries for decades. The wall face is encrusted with sea fans, barrel sponges, and encrusting corals typical of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Visibility is consistently 25–30 meters. Water temperatures hold at 27–29°C year-round.

Marine Life

The reef plateau at Peter’s Place is an excellent turtle habitat — hawksbill turtles are reliably encountered feeding on sponges. Eagle rays pass along the wall face. The wall supports large sea fans with flamingo tongues feeding on the polyps, and barrel sponges big enough for a diver to look inside. Spotted drums are found in pairs near coral heads. French and queen angelfish are territorial residents. Nurse sharks rest in ledges along the wall at 15–20 meters. Caribbean reef sharks patrol deeper sections. The creole wrasse schools that swarm many Roatán walls are present here in impressive numbers.

Dive Profile

Begin on the reef plateau at 8–10 meters, exploring the coral diversity before moving to the wall edge. Descend along the wall face to 18–22 meters for the primary dive. Navigate slowly along the wall, monitoring depth. Return toward the mooring by ascending the wall back to the reef top. Complete the safety stop on the shallow plateau at 5 meters where fish life is dense. Total dive time typically runs 45–55 minutes.

Entry and Exit

Operated by West End and West Bay dive shops, as well as French Harbour operators. Permanent mooring buoy. Entry via giant stride or back roll. Follow your guide’s instructions for navigation along the wall.

Tips

• The reef top at 8–10 meters has a particularly diverse hard coral community — don’t rush past it on the way to the wall
• Hovering motionless near coral heads increases the chance of turtle encounters
• Peter’s Place is a comfortable second dive after the deeper Mary’s Place
• Bring a macro lens attachment if you have one — flamingo tongues on sea fans and small gobies on the reef are photogenic
• Morning dives have the best light angles for wall photography

Safety

Intermediate dive. Maintain depth discipline along the wall face — the bottom extends well beyond 24 meters and there is no visible reference in the blue water to indicate depth. Monitor your dive computer regularly. Current is generally manageable but deploy an SMB for the open-water ascent.

Photography

Excellent combination photography site. Wide-angle shots along the wall face with sea fans and open water in the background capture the grandeur of the Roatán wall system. Macro subjects on the reef top include flamingo tongues, Christmas tree worms, and various commensal species on sponges. Turtle encounters on the plateau in bright, shallow light produce outstanding natural-light portraits.
