Shallow El Aquario is a reef dive site in Roatán, Caribbean.

Overview

Shallow El Aquario is the upper section of the El Aquario dive site, where the reef flat offers easy, calm diving before the deeper site’s 150-foot vertical wall transitions to a 45-degree slope below. In the shallows, large groupers move confidently among the coral heads, accustomed to divers, and sea turtles graze on the algae-covered surfaces. This section is perfect for new divers and snorkelers who want to experience the marine life density of the West End without committing to the deeper wall. Juvenile fish use the coral thickets as nursery habitat, and the diversity of small reef species here can keep a patient observer busy for an entire dive.

Photography

The colorful reef structures offer excellent macro photography opportunities. Look for small critters hiding among coral heads and anemones. Wide-angle shots work well to capture the vibrant reef landscape and schooling fish.
