Overview
The Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo is a submerged volcanic cone (Surtseyan type) that formed 4,000–5,000 years ago, creating a natural ring-shaped islet with a sheltered bay inside the crater. Designated a protected area, the islet lies less than 500 metres from the town of Vila Franca do Campo, 5 minutes by boat from the marina (45 minutes from Ponta Delgada). Maximum depth is 22 metres.
The volcanic geology creates dramatic cracks, canyons, and arched passages around the islet. Divers can vary their route based on wave direction, making this a flexible site for all experience levels including introductory dives. The protected status supports notably dense fish populations compared to surrounding areas.

Azores chromis (Chromis limbata), ornate wrasses (Thalassoma pavo), blacktail combers (Serranus atricauda), parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense), ballan wrasses (Labrus bergylta), barred hogfish (Bodianus scrofa), moray eels, common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), common stingrays, dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus), white trevallies, yellowmouth barracudas (Sphyraena viridensis), and Almaco jacks (Seriola rivoliana).
