Playa Frans

Remote far-north shore dive at the edge of Washington-Slagbaai Park — concrete quay entry, moderate-to-strong currents, and a nutrient-rich slope that supports diverse life.

Overview

Playa Frans sits at the far north of Bonaire’s western coast, technically just outside the Washington-Slagbaai National Park boundary along a rugged 7-kilometer dirt road. The combination of remote location, limited mobile reception, and a small concrete quay rather than a sandy beach makes this a site for self-sufficient experienced divers. The reef itself is healthy and the currents — though they require respect — bring plankton and pelagic species along the slope.

Marine Life

Large schools of blue tangs, black surgeonfish, parrotfish, rock beauty, green moray, barracuda, triggerfish, and sea turtles. The nutrient-rich current supports a denser fish community than the calmer southern sites.

Dive Profile

The reef begins around 8 meters and slopes gradually with old reef structure nearly reaching the surface. Sandy channels cut through the reef. Most of the life is in the 8–25 meter range. Plan against the current rather than with it on the outbound leg.

Entry and Exit

Drive ~7 km on a rugged dirt road from the main coastal route — 4WD strongly recommended; phones may be out of range. Use the small concrete quay for entry. Exit at the same point.

Tips

• Confirm road condition before driving in — the access road deteriorates after rain
• Self-sufficiency required — limited emergency services within reach
• Bring an SMB
• Avoid in any meaningful swell

Remote location, limited mobile reception, moderate-to-strong currents, and difficult emergency access. Plan conservatively and never dive solo here.

Photography

The nutrient-rich slope rewards wide-angle for the fish schools and rays. Calm-day visibility is excellent.

Nearby Sites

Boka Bartol, Boka Katuna, and Wayaka 2 lie inside the adjacent Washington-Slagbaai Park. Carel’s Vision is the nearest non-park site to the south.
