The Rock

A southwest-coast Bonaire pinnacle dive — a distinct coral formation rising from the sandy bottom, intermediate depth and current exposure, with good fish life around the structure.

Overview

The Rock is a named pinnacle on Bonaire’s southwest coast, positioned between Pink Beach and the Salt Pier area. Unlike the standard fringing reef profile of most Bonaire west-coast sites, The Rock is a distinct pinnacle formation — a coral-encrusted structure rising from a sandy bottom — which concentrates marine life and creates more varied topography than a typical shore dive. The intermediate difficulty reflects the current exposure and the 27-metre maximum depth.

Marine Life

Pinnacle structures in Bonaire typically attract schooling fish that use the current breaks around the formation. Parrotfish, snapper, groupers, and barracuda are common around coral pinnacles.

Dive Profile

Shore entry with a swim to the pinnacle structure. The pinnacle provides a reference point for circling at different depths. Most productive at 10–22 metres around the structure.

Tips

• Swim around the full structure to see all aspects of the pinnacle
• Check current direction before entry — the pinnacle can accelerate flow around it

The pinnacle provides a more varied photographic subject than a flat reef slope — good for wide-angle around the structure.
