Aquarium

Aquarium is a shallow beginner reef dive in the Faa’a lagoon on Tahiti’s west coast, French Polynesia. The name reflects the extraordinary density of tropical fish in its protected, current-free lagoon environment, which routinely serves as a training and initiation dive site for Papeete-area operators.

Overview

Located approximately 10 minutes by boat from the Punaauia dive centre base, the site sits within the calm Faa’a lagoon on a colourful coral garden with depths of 2–18 metres. The protected setting creates no significant current, making this one of the most accessible dives in Tahiti. Visibility is typically 15–25 metres. Water temperatures average 27–28°C year-round. The site is recommended by operators for beginner divers, re-adaptation dives, and dive courses.

What to Expect

The coral garden supports a high density of tropical reef fish including clownfish in anemones, parrotfish, trevally, triggerfish, lionfish, and stonefish. Sea turtles are occasionally encountered. The site’s shallow, current-free environment and vivid fish life create the “aquarium” atmosphere for which it is named. While the marine life diversity is typical of protected Tahitian lagoon sites rather than the outer reef, the calm conditions allow extended bottom times and relaxed observation.
