Adantia K.

A historic wreck in the Fury Shoals — the site is listed in OSM as “Adantia K.” which is a likely misspelling of the vessel’s correct name, Adamantia K. (ex-Teti Nomicos). She ran aground on Abu Galawa reef in the Fury Shoals in January 1948.

Overview

The vessel listed here as “Adantia K.” (correct spelling: Adamantia K) has a documented history. She was built in 1919–May 1920 at Bremer Vulkan Werke / Stettiner Oberwerke in Stettin-Grabow, 844 GRT and approximately 61.7 metres length between perpendiculars (approximately 64–65 metres LOA). She sailed under several names during her career: Marienburg, Koholyt, Kastoria, Angela, Adamantia K (from 1953), and was operating under the name Teti Nomicos at the time of her loss. On January 23, 1948, she ran aground on Abu Galawa reef in the Fury Shoals while sailing from Port Sudan to Piraeus in ballast. The wreck is largely collapsed: the engine is exposed at approximately 4 metres; sections extend to approximately 8 metres; the hull is completely collapsed. The OSM data attribute “Adantia K.” (with the dot) appears to preserve a slightly incorrect spelling — the site name has not been changed to maintain data linkage, but the vessel’s correct name is Adamantia K.

Safety Considerations

The hull is completely collapsed — there is no interior penetration. External exploration of the debris field and engine section is the appropriate dive plan. Current assessment before entry. SMB before ascending.
