Ben El Gebel is a reef dive site near Hurghada on the northern Egyptian Red Sea coast. The name translates roughly from Arabic as “Son of the Mountain” or “Between the Rocks,” reflecting the site’s character of coral pinnacles and rocky reef formations rising from a sandy bottom.

Overview

Ben El Gebel features a series of coral heads, small pinnacles, and reef outcrops scattered across a sandy plateau at around 15–20 meters. This scattered formation creates numerous micro-habitats and hiding spots for reef species, giving the site a sense of exploration as divers move from one formation to the next. The site is regularly included in Hurghada day-trip itineraries due to its accessible depth, calm conditions, and reliable marine life. Visibility runs 15–25 meters; water temperatures average 22–29°C.

Marine Life

The isolated coral formations attract a disproportionately rich fish community: grouper, snapper, and sea bream shelter around the bases, while wrasse and parrotfish work the coral surfaces. Moray eels are common in the rocky crevices. Crocodilefish are frequently spotted camouflaged on the sandy floor between formations. Octopus are a regular sighting, and blue-spotted rays rest on the sand.

Dive Profile

Descend to the sandy bottom at 18–20 meters and navigate between the coral outcrops, spending a few minutes at each formation. Ascend progressively as you cover the site, finishing on shallower pinnacle tops at 8–12 meters. A long, relaxed safety stop above the shallow formations completes the dive comfortably.

Entry and Exit

Day boat from Hurghada with mooring at the site. Giant stride entry off the dive platform. Exit via the boat ladder on the operator’s signal. SMB is useful if drifting from the mooring.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Move slowly between formations and let the wildlife settle before descending on each coral head
  • Scan the sand carefully — crocodilefish and flatfish are easily missed
  • Check overhangs and crevices at the base of pinnacles for resting sharks
  • Suitable for photographers of all levels — variety of both wide-angle and macro subjects
  • Pair with a shallower reef site for an easy two-dive day

Safety Considerations

Conditions are generally calm and current is light. The primary hazards are fire coral on the pinnacle structures and sea urchins in crevices. Boat traffic in the area requires SMB deployment. Maintain neutral buoyancy over sandy areas to avoid siltation.

Photography

The scattered pinnacle arrangement provides excellent compositional options. Wide-angle shots framing coral heads against the sandy bottom work well. Crocodilefish, octopus, and moray eels offer compelling macro and close-wide subjects.
