El Dahr

El Dahr is a dive site in the Ras Mohammed National Park zone on the Sinai Peninsula, with coordinates placing it in the western sector of the park area near the Gulf of Suez side. The name “El Dahr” is Arabic for “the back” or “the ridge,” suggesting a reef or ridge-type structure.

Overview

The site sits in the Ras Mohammed peninsula area, one of the Red Sea’s richest marine environments. The park was declared a protected area in 1983 and covers 480 km². Sites on the western (Gulf of Suez) side of Ras Mohammed differ in character from the famous eastern wall dives: they tend to feature more sheltered conditions, with coral gardens and sandy slopes as opposed to the dramatic vertical walls of Shark Reef and Yolanda. The strong plankton-bearing currents that characterise the Ras Mohammed tip circulate nutrients throughout the peninsula, supporting excellent coral growth across all sectors.

Marine Life

The Ras Mohammed National Park ecosystem supports over 200 coral species and approximately 1,000 fish species. Sites in this sector of the park host typical Red Sea reef communities including groupers, Napoleon wrasse, barracuda, eagle rays, pufferfish, and anthias-covered coral structures. Pelagic species are seasonally present, particularly between June and August.
