Elba Reef West (Fingers)

A series of narrow coral ridges projecting from Elba’s western face — the “fingers” create sheltered passages between them ideal for macro exploration and hard coral photography in calm water away from the exposed eastern face.

Overview

Elba Reef West (Fingers) describes a section of the western face of Elba Reef atoll characterised by elongated coral ridges — “fingers” — projecting outward from the main reef structure into the sandy slope. These ridges create protected channels between them, typically 5–10 metres wide and several metres deep, where currents are moderated and diver-friendly micro-habitats develop. The western side of Elba is generally more sheltered than the exposed eastern and southern faces, making the Fingers section a calmer alternative on days with easterly winds or strong oceanic current. The ridges themselves carry excellent hard coral growth and are home to resident fish communities in each individual channel.

Site Information

  • Location: Western face, Elba Reef atoll, near Egyptian-Sudanese border (~22°N)
  • Entry Type: Boat dive
  • Site Type: Reef
  • Difficulty Level: Intermediate
  • Maximum Depth: 20 meters
  • Typical Visibility: 25–35 meters
  • Current: Mild in the finger channels; stronger at the outer reef edge
  • Best Time: October to April

Marine Life

The channels between the finger ridges function as sheltered corridors where reef fish congregate in high density: groupers, moray eels, snappers, and goatfish are consistently present. Scorpionfish and lionfish occupy the shadowed overhangs at the base of each ridge. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on the sandy floors between the fingers. The ridge tops carry hard coral gardens at 5–12 metres with abundant anthias and butterflyfish. Turtles are frequently observed resting on the upper surfaces of the ridges. The outer edge of the finger system, where it meets the main reef slope, holds humphead wrasse and grey reef sharks.

Dive Profile

Enter at the outer tips of the northernmost finger ridges and work progressively toward the main reef body, exploring each channel in turn. The channels run roughly east-west and are navigated by descending into the channel floor at 15–18 metres and following it back toward the reef at 5–8 metres. The most productive sections are the mid-channel floors where fish concentration is highest. After exploring three or four finger channels, ascend to the upper reef structure for the safety stop at 5 metres. Total dive covers approximately 150–200 metres of reef.

Entry and Exit

Liveaboard expedition access only — part of 10–12 day southern Red Sea itineraries. The western face of Elba provides the most sheltered mooring positions on the atoll, and the Fingers section is typically the first dive on the atoll when the liveaboard arrives. Egyptian Navy permit required. Giant stride entry from the tender. Deploy SMB before ascending.

Tips and Recommendations

  • The sheltered channels make this an excellent option when eastern face conditions are unfitable — plan as an alternative to the exposed east sections
  • Explore the sandy floor at the base of each ridge for blue-spotted rays and flatfish
  • The ridge overhangs at 15–18 metres are productive scorpionfish locations — examine carefully
  • This section suits macro photography better than the open-face sections — the enclosed channel environments provide calm, well-lit subjects
  • Night dives on the western fingers, if logistics allow, produce octopuses, cone shells, and feeding moray eels

Safety Considerations

The finger channels are generally safe and sheltered, but disorientation is possible in poor visibility or if a diver strays from the channel system. Maintain awareness of depth and compass heading within the channels. Scorpionfish at ridge bases are a contact hazard — maintain good buoyancy. The outer reef edge beyond the fingers receives stronger current — stay within the finger system unless conditions are assessed and good. SMB mandatory before ascending.

Photography

The finger channels provide excellent macro and close-focus wide-angle opportunities: channel floors with stingrays, ridge overhangs with lionfish portraits, and anthias-covered ridge tops at 8–10 metres in good ambient light. The enclosed geometry of each channel creates natural framing for reef fish portraits. The sandy channel floors between ridges support ghost shrimp and goby-shrimp partnerships for macro work.
