Gabel Rosas

Gabel Rosas is a dive site in Red Sea, Middle East.

Overview

Gabel (Gebel) Rosas is a shore dive site in a narrow U-shaped bay approximately 11–18 km north of Marsa Alam, characterised by a sandy bottom that slopes gently downward with the reef forming walls on both sides of the bay. The reef is notably fire-coral-rich, especially on the upper sections, with the walls also supporting diverse hard corals. Small caves along the northern side shelter assemblages of tiny reef fish. The bay shape provides natural protection from currents and swell — conditions described as “no current” — making this an easy dive for all levels and an excellent spot for snorkelling. Maximum depth reaches 30 m on the outer drop-off; however, most of the interesting life is in the shallower coral zones. Visibility frequently exceeds 30 m in favourable conditions (June–September is optimal).

Marine Life

Turtles, barracuda, schools of snapper and goatfish are commonly reported residents. The reef walls support reef fish typical of the southern Red Sea: angelfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, and wrasse. The caves on the north side hold concentrations of small fish. Occasional reef sharks appear at the bay entrance.

Dive Profile

Shore entry over a sandy beach into the bay. The sandy bottom slopes with reef walls on both flanks descending to 30 m at the outer bay entrance. Most recreational dives are conducted at 5–20 m. No current; easy navigation by following the bay walls. Duration 45–60 minutes. Night dives are also excellent at this site.

Entry and Exit

Easy shore entry from a sandy beach. No boat required. Suitable for all levels including snorkellers. Included in dive packages from Marsa Alam operators (e.g., SeaHorse Diving Club).

Tips and Recommendations

Explore the small caves on the north wall for concentrations of small fish. The site is particularly good for beginners and snorkellers due to the protected bay and easy entry. Visit at noon for the best light in the bay interior. Early morning dives tend to have the calmest conditions.

Safety Considerations

Fire coral (Millepora) is abundant on the reef — avoid contact. Visibility may be temporarily reduced during low tide and strong wave action near the entry point. Keep within recreational depth limits at the outer bay drop-off.
