Gorgonia Housereef

Gorgonia Housereef is the shore-accessible house reef of Gorgonia Beach Resort (now SeaClub Gorgonia Beach Resort), located at the border of Wadi El Gemal National Park, approximately 45 km south of Marsa Alam. It is operated by TGI Diving, a PADI 5-star dive centre. The reef is praised as one of the finest house reefs on Egypt’s southern Red Sea coast.

Overview

The reef is accessed via a 150 m jetty extending from the resort, with an entry pontoon at the end allowing diving at any time of day. Divers can explore the reef in both northerly and southerly directions from the entry point. The reef sits approximately 3 miles offshore and runs for more than a mile. It features plateaus and coral gardens with two walls dropping into deep water. Minimum experience required: Open Water certification with 20+ logged dives.

Marine Life

The reef supports a wide variety of hard and soft corals including large gorgonian fans, octocorals, and black corals. Regular marine life encounters include trevally, barracuda, moray eels, sea turtles, groupers, eagle rays, and anemonefish. Dolphins and various reef sharks are occasionally reported. The reef’s southern Red Sea location within the national park contributes to its relatively pristine condition.

Dive Profile

Maximum depth at the jetty entry is 12 m; the reef wall drops to greater depths in both directions. Shore entry via jetty is available throughout the day. All diving is guided when operated by TGI Diving. The site can also be combined with boat dives to Sataya, Shaab Bohar, and other nearby offshore sites.
