Gota El Dir

Gota El Dir (also spelled Gotta El Dier, meaning “Piece of the Monastery”) is a coral pinnacle dive site located approximately 30 minutes south of El Gouna by boat. It is one of the closest offshore reefs to El Gouna and is a popular destination for half-day trips and beginner divers, as well as certification training and refresher programs.

Overview

A single impressive coral pinnacle rises from a sandy bottom at approximately 14–16 metres. The sheltered position and calm conditions make it ideal for relaxed diving at all levels. The pinnacle’s shallow summit and surrounding sandy slope provide a variety of habitats in a compact dive area. Dolphins and eagle rays are occasional visitors, making each dive here potentially memorable.

Marine Life

• Dense clouds of orange anthias and shimmering glassfish around the pinnacle
• Scorpionfish and lionfish in recesses on the coral structure
• Blue-spotted stingrays resting on the sandy bottom
• Eagle rays occasionally passing in the blue water
• Dolphins sighted in the area

Dive Profile

Boat dive; entry from zodiac or day boat. Descend to the sandy base at 14–16 m beside the main pinnacle. Divers circle the structure, ascending gradually to the shallow coral crown at 5–8 m for the safety stop. Maximum depth approximately 18 m. Minimal current; suitable for Open Water divers. A wall and small canyon feature are accessible on the outer edges.

• Long, comfortable bottom times due to shallow depth
• Excellent site for underwater photography — anthias and glassfish create dynamic foreground subjects
• Popular for PADI Open Water training and ReActivate refresher programs
• Also suitable for snorkelling from the boat
