Gotta Hemera is a submerged reef pinnacle in the southern Egyptian Red Sea, located in the remote offshore waters between Berenice and the Zabargad–Rocky Island area.
Overview
“Gotta” (a common spelling variant of “gota”) in this part of the Red Sea refers to an isolated reef knoll or submerged pinnacle, and Hemera sits in a little-visited stretch of the far southern offshore corridor. The site is on select liveaboard itineraries that reach south past Zabargad Island toward the Sudan border — a route reserved for experienced divers seeking truly remote diving. The reef rises from the sandy seafloor to 5–8 meters below the surface, its flanks covered in soft corals and encrusting corals, with large sea fans appearing below 12 meters. Water clarity in this southern section is typically outstanding, regularly exceeding 30 meters.

Marine Life
The isolation of the site means marine life shows little human habituation. humphead wrasse, large groupers, and giant moray eels are all present and notably unafraid of divers. Schools of fusiliers and snapper populate the mid-water zone above the reef, and barracuda hang in loose patrols above the pinnacle. Hammerhead sharks are encountered in the blue water around the base on winter itineraries. Hawksbill turtles rest on the reef crown. The plankton-rich southern waters support a richer array of filter feeders — including crinoids and basket stars — than is typical of northern Red Sea sites.
Dive Profile
Descend to the deepest accessible section at 18–20 meters and circle the pinnacle base, watching the blue water for pelagics. Ascend the flanks methodically, noting the sea fan coverage below 12 meters and the transition to hard corals above. The reef crown at 5–8 meters warrants a slow, careful circuit to observe turtles and dense schooling fish before the safety stop.
Entry and Exit
Liveaboard access exclusively. Itineraries including this site are typically 10–14 nights and operate from Hurghada, Port Ghalib, or Marsa Alam. Entry by giant stride from the dive deck. Deploy an SMB well before the final ascent — this is a fully open-water environment.
Tips and Recommendations
- Research the specific liveaboard itinerary carefully — not all vessels that venture south include this pinnacle
- Bring all the dive gear you need; resupply is not possible at this remote location
- Winter liveaboards have the best chance of hammerhead encounters
- The site rewards slow, deliberate diving more than rushed surveys
- Allow time to simply hover and observe the fish community — undisturbed populations behave very differently from those near dive hubs
Safety Considerations
Remoteness is the defining safety factor here. No rescue resources are available except the liveaboard. Dive conservatively, communicate with the dive guide, and carry all standard safety equipment: SMB, dive knife, signalling mirror, and torch. Currents can be unpredictable around isolated pinnacles in open water.
