Ras Malek

Ras Malek is a cape and reef dive site on the Red Sea coast in the Hurghada / Sahl Hasheesh area of Egypt, with coordinates placing it near the coastline south of central Hurghada. “Ras Malek” means “King’s Cape” in Arabic. The site is in the vicinity of the Sahl Hasheesh resort development, which has a number of accessible offshore reefs.

Overview

The central Egyptian Red Sea coast between Hurghada and Safaga features numerous fringing reefs and offshore patch reefs accessible by boat. A cape (ras) typically offers a varied dive structure where currents concentrate around the headland tip, attracting schooling fish and pelagic visitors. The reef wall or slope on either side of the headland provides the primary diving terrain at depths of 5–25 metres.

Marine Life

Reef fish communities in the Hurghada / Sahl Hasheesh zone include groupers, Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracuda, trevally, parrotfish, lionfish, and crocodilefish. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches. The hard and soft coral formations support anthias, butterflyfish, wrasse, and damsels. Dolphins are occasionally sighted offshore. The region’s reefs hold a substantial fraction of the Red Sea’s approximately 1,000 fish species.
