Ras Murat

Ras Murat is a cape and reef dive site in the northern Sinai Peninsula area, with coordinates (28.03°N, 34.44°E) placing it in the vicinity of the Nabq Protected Area, north of Sharm El Sheikh on the Gulf of Aqaba coast. “Ras” means cape in Arabic; “Murat” is the place name for this headland.

Overview

This part of the Sinai coast near Nabq features fringing reefs close to the shore, with the Gulf of Aqaba’s clear, deep water dropping away quickly from the coastal shelf. Reefs in this zone benefit from the Gulf of Aqaba’s exceptional water clarity (often 20–30+ metres visibility), relatively minimal current compared to the open Red Sea, and rich coral growth. The headland structure creates varied terrain suitable for exploration diving.

Marine Life

The northern Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba reef communities include a high density of endemic species — the Gulf of Aqaba is particularly noted for its endemic Red Sea fauna. Reef fish include anthias, butterflyfish, angelfish, wrasse, groupers, and moray eels. Stonefish, scorpionfish, and crocodilefish occupy the reef base. Blue-spotted stingrays (Taeniura lymma) are common on sandy patches. Reef sharks (whitetip) patrol the outer reef edge. The Nabq area’s protected status contributes to healthy, undisturbed reef ecology.

Dive Profile

Boat access from Sharm El Sheikh (approximately 45–60 minutes). The headland creates a 360-degree dive opportunity — divers can work the reef wall on one face, round the cape tip, and explore the sheltered side. Maximum depth approximately 25 metres on the outer reef.
