Ras Torombi

Ras Torombi is a reef headland and dive site in the Marsa Alam region of Egypt’s southern Red Sea, located approximately 8.5 kilometres north of Ras Ghalib. The broader Torombi area contains three distinct dive sites — Torombi Pinnacles, Torombi Garden, and Marsa Torombi — spread across a 360-metre-wide bay that has been a protected marine area for over 20 years. The bay is accessible by land via a nearby road.

Overview

Ras Torombi itself refers to the headland/cape that marks the bay’s outer edge. The outer fringing reef at Ras Torombi extends to approximately 30 metres on its outer face. The most productive diving zone is 10–15 metres, where hard coral and table coral formations provide the richest habitat. The southern reef section offers a shallow drift dive along the reef plate. Deep seagrass meadows are present within the bay. Visibility ranges from 5 to 25 metres, with best conditions from May to September.

Marine Life

The Torombi bay area is particularly notable for its resident dugong population — part of the bay has been restricted from boat access specifically to protect dugongs from propeller injuries. Hawksbill sea turtles are regularly encountered. Barracuda schools, unicornfish, titan triggerfish, and burrfish are typical reef residents. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches. Crocodilefish, stonefish, and sea slugs reward careful observation. Bottlenose dolphins have been sighted in the bay. At the Torombi Pinnacles (a separate but nearby site), lionfish, rays, and abundant small reef fish are noted sightings.

Dive Profile

The outer reef (Ras Torombi itself) suits drift diving with a gentle 1-knot current on the southern reef section. The bay interior is calmer and suitable for check dives and leisurely reef exploration. Water temperature ranges from 25–33°C across seasons. Night dives are available.

Entry / Exit

Boat access; a RIB typically drops divers at the northern end of the bay, from where they dive back toward the boat or a different exit point. The fringing reef requires care on entry.
