Scubaworld

Scubaworld is a reef dive site located in the El Quseir area of Egypt’s central Red Sea coast, at approximately 25.6°N. El Quseir is a historic port city roughly 85 km south of Hurghada, and its surrounding reefs are popular with both day-trip divers and liveaboards as an alternative to the busier Hurghada and Marsa Alam sites. The site name — unusual for a reef — may be a colloquial designation used by local dive operators.

Overview

The reef at this location is characteristic of the El Quseir coastal zone: a fringing reef system close to shore with a diverse profile including shallow reef flats, a gently sloping outer face, and sand and rubble at depth. El Quseir’s reefs are generally in good condition and less crowded than those around Hurghada, attracting divers looking for a quieter experience with high-quality coral and fish life. The site offers accessible diving at depths appropriate for intermediate divers.

Marine Life

The El Quseir reef system is notable for healthy coral cover and a full complement of Red Sea reef fish. Butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and wrasse are abundant throughout the reef. Moray eels are resident in the coral heads, and lionfish and scorpionfish use ledges for ambush positions. Green and hawksbill turtles are frequently sighted in this region. The El Quseir area is also known for regular dugong sightings, particularly at certain seagrass habitats along the coast. Reef sharks patrol the outer edge of the reef slope.

Dive Profile

Descend to the reef top in 5–8 meters and follow the slope down to 15–20 meters. The reef profile here is relatively gradual, making for comfortable depth management. Explore the coral formations on the upper slope, checking crevices and overhangs for reef residents. Work deeper along the outer face and return up the slope for your safety stop in the shallows. The reef can typically be dived as an out-and-back or a circuit depending on site layout.

Access is by dive boat from El Quseir area operators. Entry via giant stride. Navigate to the reef on descent. Deploy an SMB at the end of the dive for safety stop and boat pickup.

Tips and Recommendations

• El Quseir is significantly less crowded than Hurghada — an advantage for photographers and wildlife observation
• Ask your operator about dugong sightings in the area; El Quseir is one of the best dugong zones in Egypt
• The reef condition here is generally excellent; practice precise buoyancy to keep it that way
• Bring a macro lens — the coral base has nudibranchs and invertebrates worth finding
• Afternoon dives can offer excellent light for photography on the east-facing slope

Safety Considerations

Currents are generally moderate in this area but can strengthen with tidal changes. Always carry an SMB for open-water safety stops. Fire coral is present on the reef surface. Lionfish are well-camouflaged — look before placing hands near ledges or coral bases.

Photography

This site offers good all-round photographic opportunities. The reef’s healthy coral provides wide-angle backdrop subjects, and the relatively calm conditions make close-focus wide-angle work manageable. Macro photographers will find invertebrates, small fish, and nudibranchs on careful examination of the coral base. Natural light conditions are good throughout the day given the site’s orientation.
