Shaab Said Nord

Shaab Said Nord is the northern section of Shaab Said, a reef complex on the outer shelf of the Egyptian Red Sea south of Marsa Alam, offering good coral coverage and typical outer-reef marine life including turtles, sharks, and schooling fish.

Overview

Shaab Said is a submerged reef system positioned on the outer edge of the Egyptian Red Sea continental shelf, roughly east of Marsa Alam. The northern section — Shaab Said Nord — forms the upper arm of the reef, characterised by a broad coral platform that drops via a gentle slope and occasional steeper sections to a sandy bottom. The reef is part of the outer Red Sea reef belt where water clarity is consistently excellent, often reaching 25–35 metres. This area sees relatively little recreational dive traffic compared to the more established sites to the north, contributing to good coral health and less habituated marine life. Water temperatures range from 23°C in winter to 29°C in summer.

Marine Life

The northern reef section of Shaab Said supports solid populations of reef fish typical of the outer Egyptian Red Sea: anthias, basslets, and butterflyfish populate the coral slopes, while napoleonfish and groupers cruise the deeper reef edges. Sea turtles — both green and hawksbill — are frequently sighted on the reef platform. Grey reef sharks patrol the outer reef edge, and cleaning stations on the coral heads attract wrasse activity. Glassfish schools hover around the larger coral formations, drawing in hunting trevally and barracuda.

Dive Profile

Dives at Shaab Said Nord typically begin at the reef rim, descending from the platform top at 5–8 metres to the reef slope bottom at 18–20 metres. The dive follows the northern contour of the reef before ascending back to the shallower platform for the safety stop. Drift potential exists along the outer edge in stronger current conditions. Plan a standard three-stop ascent with a 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres.

Entry and Exit

All access is by dive boat from Marsa Alam operators, or by liveaboard. Entry is via giant stride or back roll. Return to the dive tender using an SMB to signal position during ascent. Conditions are generally comfortable but monitor current direction from the surface briefing.

Tips and Recommendations

• Ask the dive guide about the state of the current — the outer reef edge can funnel strong flows
• The reef platform top is excellent for a no-decompression extension when current is slack
• Watch for hawksbill turtles feeding on sponges along the deeper coral ledges
• This is a good site to combine with Shaab Said South or North for a full outer-reef day

Safety Considerations

Currents on the outer reef edge at Shaab Said can be unpredictable and strong during tidal exchanges. The remote location of this reef means that emergency support is not immediately available — dive conservatively and communicate clearly with boat crew. Always carry an SMB. Fire coral is present on the shallower sections and can cause skin irritation on contact.

Photography

Outer Red Sea reefs offer superb wide-angle conditions due to excellent clarity. Coral formations at mid-depth with blue water behind are ideal for reef-scape compositions. Turtle portraits in natural light are achievable at this site, and barracuda ball formations provide dynamic wide-angle opportunities when current is running.
