Shaab Shona

Shaab Shona is a coral reef on the Egyptian Red Sea shelf at approximately 25.47°N, positioned in the Quseir area diving corridor and offering a moderate reef dive with good coral health and a mix of reef fish and occasional larger visitors.

Overview

Shaab Shona lies on the outer Egyptian Red Sea shelf in the zone between Hurghada and Quseir, within reach of day operators from Quseir and on the standard circuit for northern Red Sea liveaboards. The reef forms a submerged coral structure rising to a shallow platform, with a sloping outer face that provides the primary diving terrain to around 20 metres. This part of the Red Sea benefits from the generally good water quality of the mid-coast shelf — visibility is typically 20–28 metres and the reef shows healthy coral coverage. The site receives moderate boat traffic as part of day-trip circuits from Quseir, which is the closest significant dive hub.

Marine Life

The reef at Shaab Shona holds the characteristic fish fauna of the central Egyptian Red Sea: anthias swarm around the coral formations, and resident groupers occupy the deeper coral ledges. humphead wrasse are sighted intermittently, and sea turtles appear on the reef platform. The outer slope base holds blue-spotted stingrays and the occasional whitetip reef shark resting in the sand. Moray eels and lionfish are present throughout, and butterflyfish are conspicuous on the shallower coral formations.

Dive Profile

Standard dives at Shaab Shona follow the outer reef slope from the platform crest at 5–8 metres down to the sandy base at 18–20 metres, with the most productive marine life encountered in the 10–15 metre range along the mid-slope. Navigation is guided by the reef contour, making this an accessible dive for intermediate divers unfamiliar with the site. Finish on the platform top before completing the safety stop.

Entry and Exit

Access by day boat from Quseir or by liveaboard. Entry by giant stride from the dive deck. Return to boat using an SMB to signal position during ascent. Ask the operator about the current pattern before entry.

• The 10–15 metre mid-slope range is where fish diversity peaks — spend most of your dive time here

Currents at Shaab Shona are generally light to moderate, though exposed outer-reef sections can develop stronger flows during tidal exchanges. Always carry and deploy an SMB. Fire coral on the reef crest requires awareness, particularly when surge is present. Boat traffic should be monitored on ascent.

Photography

Shaab Shona offers reliable reef photography conditions. The mid-slope at 12–15 metres provides good ambient light for wide-angle reef landscape shots, and the coral heads on the platform support macro subjects including gobies and small crustaceans.
