Small Gubal

Small Gubal (Gubal Seghir) is a small uninhabited island in the Strait of Gubal whose surrounding reefs and walls offer varied diving — best known as the resting place of the 1887 wreck of the Ulysses on its northern face.

Overview

The island sits approximately 49 km north of Hurghada in the Strait of Gubal, the channel connecting the northern Red Sea to the Gulf of Suez. The island’s most notable dive attraction is the Ulysses wreck, an 1887 iron steamer lying on its port side on the northern reef face with the bow in 4–5 m and the stern at about 28 m.

Beyond the wreck, the island hosts several reef sites: Bluff Point on the western side presents a steep wall covered with soft and hard corals and overhangs; the shallower Gubal Garden reef is a colourful coral garden reaching only about 10 m in maximum depth and is suitable for snorkelling.

Marine Life

Colourful schools of anthias, reef fish, and moray eels throughout the site. The coral gardens support reef sharks, turtles, and barracuda on the outer walls. Currents in the strait can be strong and unpredictable — the enhanced nutrient flow supports a productive reef ecosystem with good soft coral growth.

Dive Profile

Depths range from the surface down to 28 m on the wreck stern. Multiple dive sites around the island at different depth ranges suit various experience levels. The Ulysses wreck offers an accessible shallow section plus a deeper stern. Currents around the island can be challenging; Advanced divers will find the outer walls and full wreck most rewarding.
