St John's Gota Kebir

St John’s Gota Kebir — “Gota Kebir” translating from Arabic as “large coral head” or “big dome” — is a prominent pinnacle or reef platform within the St John’s Reef system of the southern Egyptian Red Sea. It is one of the larger structural features of this remote offshore reef complex, visited exclusively by liveaboard itineraries running the “Deep South” route.
Overview
Gota Kebir presents as a broad, flattish reef top at 5-8 meters that slopes and drops on multiple sides to sandy bottom at around 20 meters. The sheer size of the structure allows for an extended dive with varied habitats — shallow garden reef on top, coral boulders and overhangs on the flanks, and sandy rubble channels at the base. The site’s remoteness ensures it sees far less traffic than northern Egyptian Red Sea reefs, contributing to notably healthier coral coverage and larger, less wary fish.

Marine Life
Dense aggregations of anthias and chromis blanket the reef top, with butterflyfish and angelfish picking at coral polyps. Large humphead wrasse are resident and conspicuously unafraid of divers. Green turtles rest on sandy patches at the base of the reef. On the flanks, groupers and large moray eels occupy the ledges and overhangs. Whitetip reef sharks are frequently encountered on the sandy bottom or beneath overhangs, often in pairs or small groups. Schools of barracuda and yellowfin tuna occasionally sweep through in open water above the reef.
Dive Profile
Descend to the reef top and take a circumnavigation approach — working methodically around the gota before returning across the reef crest. Descend the flanks in stages to sample different depths. The reef top from 5-10 meters offers the best hard coral coverage and fish density. Sandy channels at the base reward slower exploration for critters. End the dive on the reef top for a comfortable safety stop.
Entry and Exit
Liveaboard zodiac access only. Back roll or giant stride entry. The site is sheltered enough for direct ascent with SMB from the reef top if the zodiac is waiting nearby.

Safety Considerations
St John’s is a remote area — no decompression chamber within practical reach. Dive conservatively and watch your bottom time carefully. Moderate currents are normal; strong currents can develop at the reef point. Always surface with an SMB deployed and coordinate your ascent position with the zodiac.

The reef top in the first half of a morning dive captures the best natural light angles on hard coral. Wide-angle compositions framing humphead wrasse against the coral surface are a consistent highlight. At the reef base, a torch helps bring out the colors in the overhangs.
