St John’s Um Arouk is a coral reef dive site within the St John’s Reef system, one of the most remote and pristine reef complexes accessible in the Egyptian Red Sea. “Um Arouk” is an Arabic name referring to a distinctive feature of the reef structure — the word relates broadly to roots or branch-like forms. The site offers a representative St John’s diving experience: exceptional visibility, dense fish life, and the sense of genuine remoteness that defines this part of Egypt’s coast.
Overview
Um Arouk is part of the sprawling St John’s Reef complex approximately 100 km south of Marsa Alam, reached only by multi-day liveaboard. The site features a classic Red Sea reef platform with a sloping top at 5-10 meters descending to sandy channels and a base at 18-20 meters. Like all St John’s sites, Um Arouk benefits from extremely light diver pressure compared to the northern Red Sea — coral coverage is dense, fish are large and approachable, and the overall underwater environment feels undisturbed.

Marine Life
Um Arouk shares the exceptional marine life characteristic of St John’s Reef. humphead wrasse are bold and curious. Groupers and moray eels occupy the reef structure. Green and hawksbill turtles are regularly encountered. Whitetip reef sharks rest on sandy patches at the reef base. The fish aggregations — dense clouds of anthias, fusiliers, and snappers — create a sense of diving through a living wall of color above the reef. Occasional hammerheads or manta rays are reported in the open water beyond the reef edge.
Dive Profile
Descend to the reef slope and work methodically across the reef, sampling both the upper garden and the deeper base. Sandy channels between reef sections reward exploration for critters. The reef top provides a natural platform for the safety stop, with excellent coral coverage to enjoy during the 5-minute pause.
Entry and Exit
Liveaboard zodiac access. Entry via back roll or giant stride. Ascend with a deployed SMB and coordinate pickup with the zodiac crew, particularly if any current is running.
Tips and Recommendations
- Approach humphead wrasse slowly and directly — they are surprisingly responsive to diver engagement
- Check sandy patches at the reef base early in the dive when sharks are most active
- Bring a wide-angle lens — the fish density makes for spectacular schooling photography
- Plan the dive to end on the reef crest in good light for the safety stop
- Combine Um Arouk with other St John’s sites on the same liveaboard day for maximum coverage
Safety Considerations
St John’s is a remote location with no nearby emergency facilities — dive within conservative limits and surface with adequate air. Deploy SMB before ascending and confirm zodiac position. Moderate currents are normal; brief with the dive guide on conditions before entry.
Photography
Wide-angle compositions are the highlight — the fish schools against the coral surface and clear blue water create some of the most vivid reef images achievable in the Red Sea. For macro, the rubble zones at the reef base offer nudibranchs, shrimp, and small gobies.
