Torfa El Mesheich

Torfa El Mesheich is a coastal reef in the southern Red Sea near Hamata (lat 24.66, lon 35.11), described as unique in its structure and variety of marine life, and is used as a house reef by some dive operations in the Hamata area.

Overview

“Torfa” in Arabic indicates a protruding reef tip or cape, and El Mesheich refers to a specific local landmark. The site falls in the lightly dived southern Egyptian Red Sea between Marsa Alam and Hamata — a zone increasingly recognised for its pristine reef condition and relative lack of tourist pressure compared to the northern Red Sea.

Sources report the reef is at its best between 10 and 15 m, where coral growth is densest. The sandy bottom at 20 m is the domain of rays and sleeping guitar sharks (zebra sharks). The site is described as a coastal reef accessible as a shore or boat dive from nearby operations, with a trip duration of approximately 25 minutes from base.

Marine Life

Blue-spotted rays and guitar sharks (zebra sharks) resting on the sandy bottom at 15–20 m. Reef fish community typical of southern Red Sea coral gardens. The area’s protected status (proximity to the Wadi El Gemal National Park zone) supports healthy fish populations.

Dive Profile

Best dived between 10–15 m depth for coral quality. Maximum depth 20 m on sandy areas. Suitable for Intermediate divers; the shallow optimum depth zone allows extended bottom times.
