Tulip Housereef

The Tulip Housereef is the house reef fronting the Royal Tulip Beach Resort (also associated with the Magic Tulip Resort) on the southern Red Sea coast, approximately 20 km south of Marsa Alam Airport. The reef is accessible via a long pontoon bridge — approximately 700 metres — that crosses the lagoon and ends directly above the reef drop-off, enabling easy access in all conditions.

Overview

The Royal Tulip Beach Resort is a dedicated dive destination located between Marsa Alam Airport and the town, offering direct reef access via the long pontoon walkway. Orca Dive Club operates an on-site dive centre, running house reef dives and excursions to the broader Marsa Alam dive region.

The pontoon delivers divers directly to the drop-off, eliminating the need to wade through the lagoon. The reef features a healthy coral wall descending to approximately 25 metres, with good hard coral coverage and diverse reef fish populations. Clownfish in anemones, butterflyfish, and tangs are abundant in the shallow sections. Sea turtles are occasionally sighted along the reef, and spinner dolphins have been reported visiting the bay. Reef sharks make infrequent appearances on the deeper sections.

The site is particularly well-suited to beginner divers due to its controlled entry via the pontoon, the calm bay conditions, and the variety of marine life in a compact area.

Marine Life

Clownfish (in anemones), butterflyfish, surgeonfish, parrotfish, anthias, chromis, moray eels, groupers, sea turtles (occasional), reef sharks (occasional deeper sections), and spinner dolphins (rare bay visits). A wide diversity of hard corals on the reef face, with giant clams in the shallows.

Photography

The pontoon provides easy topside photography opportunities at dusk. Underwater, the shallow anemone beds with resident clownfish are reliable macro subjects. The drop-off wall in clear water makes excellent wide-angle reef photography.
