Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is a reef dive site on the western side of Sangalaki Island in the Derawan Archipelago, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Overview

Coral Gardens occupies Sangalaki’s southwestern shelf, where the reef shelves gradually from a shallow hard coral garden down to a flat sandy bottom at 27 metres. The site is characterised by brightly coloured hard and soft corals — acropora table corals, mosaic corals, and encrusting formations — interspersed with sponges, sea fans, and anemone gardens. At depth, the sandy flat hosts goatfish rooting through sediment alongside garden eels. The site connects to Turtle Town to the south and Sandy Ridge to the east, and mild currents occasionally allow drift dives linking all three locations. Dive The World describes it as “a very satisfying night dive” for the critters that emerge after dark.

Marine Life

• Anthias, damsels, snappers, and triggerfish on the reef face
• Cuttlefish hunting over sandy margins
• Frogfish and leaf scorpionfish in rubble zones
• Giant clams (Tridacna spp.) embedded in coral heads
• Anemonefish (Amphiprion spp.) in resident anemones
• Angelfish and butterfly fish throughout the coral garden
• At night: hermit crabs, octopus, lobsters, and mantis shrimp emerge from crevices

Dive Profile

The reef shelves from approximately 5 metres on the crest to 25 metres where coral gives way to open sand. A typical profile descends the gradual slope to around 20 metres and returns at 10–12 metres along the more colourful upper reef. Visibility averages 15–25 metres. Currents are gentle and rarely cause problems at this site.

Entry and Exit

Boat dive only. Entry is at the reef crest; the gradual topography makes navigation straightforward. Night dives are commonly offered here with a guide.

Tips

• Night dives are highly recommended — the site transforms with octopus, lobsters, and mantis shrimp visible in the open.
• The shallow coral garden at the top of the slope is ideal for ending your dive during safety stop — maximum diversity is above 10 metres.
• Check sandy patches carefully for camouflaged cuttlefish and frogfish.

Safety Considerations

The site is beginner-friendly with minimal current. Night divers should maintain close group formation and confirm torch signals with guides before descent.

Photography

The colourful hard coral garden in 5–10 metres of water makes excellent wide-angle reef photography in natural light. The flat sandy bottom at depth is well-suited for macro work — cuttlefish, frogfish, and garden eels are reliable subjects. Night photography rewards patience as animals emerge from shelter.
