Duppy Waters

Duppy Waters is a north side wall dive at the eastern end of Turtle Harbour, named after “duppy,” the Caribbean Creole word for “ghost” — a reference to the way sunlight plays across the water and reef here, giving it an ethereal, ghostly appearance.

Overview

Duppy Waters features a reef top at 20–25 ft (6–8 m) with a sand channel running to 60 ft (18 m) and the wall dropping beyond 140 ft (43 m). The site marks the eastern boundary of Turtle Harbour and is paired with CJ’s Drop Off at the western end for back-to-back north side dives on morning boat trips. The wall is decorated with oversized barrel sponges and the reef top offers a productive coral garden, with eagle rays, stingrays, and the occasional foraging octopus reported on the sloping coral garden. Morning light on this north-facing wall provides excellent visibility into the blue during the descent.

Marine Life

Large barrel sponges are a defining feature of the deeper wall sections. Grouper, snapper, and turtles are regularly sighted on the reef top and upper wall. Colorful juvenile fish are abundant in the coral garden. Eagle rays patrol the wall face, and the sandy channel supports benthic species. The surrounding waters are part of the northern exposure where pelagics including barracuda and jacks appear with currents.
