Lava Flow

Lava Flow is a coral reef site on the northern flank of Gunung Api, the active volcano that rises from the Banda Sea. The 1988 eruption sent lava cascading into the ocean, and the coral recovery on the volcanic substrate is one of the most studied reef regeneration events in the region. A peer-reviewed survey of the site found coral colonies — including tabulate Acropora (“table” corals) — reaching over 90 cm in diameter and covering more than 60% of the substrate within just five years of the eruption, an exceptionally fast colonization rate for reef-building coral.
Overview
The black volcanic substrate has been colonised by fast-growing coral. The site showcases staghorn, plate, table, and cabbage-leaf corals at densities that drew the original scientific survey of the lava flow; a dive operator guide describes the coral here as having grown roughly three times faster than typical post-disturbance recovery. Table corals reach notable size across the shallower sections, while deeper areas (20–30 m) feature fusilier aggregations. The dark lava rock creates a striking visual contrast against the coral growth.
Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) are reported in the coral rubble at Lava Flow by one liveaboard operator, which schedules dusk dives here to catch the mating display — though Mandarin City in Banda Neira harbour remains the far better-documented and more reliable site for this behaviour, with multiple independent sources confirming mandarinfish there. Napoleon wrasse, batfish, and mobula rays are reported at Lava Flow by multiple sources.
Dive Profile
A gently sloping reef from the shallows to around 30 m. The shallower sections (3–15 m) hold the densest coral formations. Deeper areas transition to more open substrate with scattered coral blocks and fusilier schools. The site is accessible as both a day dive from Banda Neira and as a liveaboard stop, but — like all Banda Sea sites — is rated Advanced in line with the destination’s remote, liveaboard-only character.

Tips
- Schedule a dusk or late-afternoon dive if hoping to see mandarinfish, though Mandarin City is the more reliable choice for that behaviour
- The shallow sections (3–10 m) have the densest coral and reward slow, careful exploration to avoid contact with the fast-growing formations
