Punta Dalila

A shallow, approachable reef in Cozumel’s southern dive zone — ideal for new divers and snorkellers seeking excellent marine life encounters within easy depth limits.

Overview

Punta Dalila is a shallow point reef in the southern section of Cozumel’s leeward coast, characterised by its accessible 15-meter maximum depth and consistent, gentle drift conditions. The site occupies a slight headland where mild current intensifies slightly, keeping the water rich in plankton and attracting a diverse range of smaller reef fish and invertebrates. The coral formations here include dense growth of star corals and brain corals in the 5–10 meter range, making the shallowest portion of the dive exceptionally rich. The combination of southern clarity, manageable depth, and relaxed current makes Punta Dalila an outstanding beginner site while still offering enough complexity to satisfy more experienced divers on a relaxed second dive.

Marine Life

The shallow, sunlit reef at Punta Dalila hosts an abundance of small and medium reef species. French angelfish and queen angelfish are present throughout. Spotted drums, with their distinctive long dorsal fin filaments, circle near larger coral heads. Hawksbill turtles graze on sponges in the upper reef zone. Banded butterflyfish, foureye butterflyfish, and longsnout butterflyfish are all found here, making this a good site for butterflyfish species counts. Cleaner wrasse stations are active on several coral heads. Green morays occupy the deeper crevices while spotted morays prefer the shallower structure. Caribbean reef squid are frequently observed in small groups in the water column above the reef.

Dive Profile

Start at the shallowest portion of the reef crest (3–5 meters) and work through the brain and star coral formations toward deeper terrain at 10–15 meters. The manageable depth means a 60+ minute bottom time is achievable. Extend the dive time in the 5–10 meter zone on the return — the density of life in the brightest part of the reef is outstanding. Safety stop is comfortably performed in natural light in the shallows.

Entry and Exit

Boat access from San Miguel; southern location adds 25–35 minutes to the boat ride. Mooring buoys used within the national park. The gentle conditions make entry and exit uncomplicated even for new divers.

Tips

• Spend the majority of the dive at 5–10 meters where the reef is densest and the light most vivid
• This site works well as the first southern dive for newer certified divers before progressing to Paso El Cedral or La Francesa
• Look for Caribbean reef squid hovering above the reef in mid-water — they are intensely curious about divers and will often approach closely
• The butterflyfish species diversity here makes Punta Dalila worth a dedicated fish-ID dive
• Combine with a snorkelling segment from the boat on calm days — the shallows are outstanding from the surface too

Safety

Beginners should still carry and deploy an SMB as standard practice on all Cozumel drift dives, even gentle ones. The current at Punta Dalila is mild, but divers should understand the basics of drift protocol before their first attempt. Fire coral occurs on some coral structures. Recompression facilities are in San Miguel, approximately 30–40 minutes by boat.

Photography

The bright, shallow, clear water at Punta Dalila is excellent for natural-light photography without strobes. Butterflyfish portraits in good ambient light are achievable with a compact camera or simple macro lens. The Caribbean reef squid, which approach curiously, are among the Caribbean’s most photogenic small cephalopods — be patient and avoid sudden movements.
