A southern wall dive adjacent to San Francisco Beach — one of Cozumel’s most celebrated stretches of reef, combining drift wall diving with a nearby snorkelling sanctuary.

Overview

San Francisco Reef sits alongside Playa San Francisco, one of Cozumel’s most visited beaches and a snorkelling hub. The dive site runs parallel to the beach along the island’s leeward southwest coast, featuring a spur-and-groove upper reef that transitions to a wall dropping to 25 meters and beyond. The site is particularly well-known for the density and health of its elkhorn and staghorn coral formations on the upper reef, species that have declined dramatically across much of the Caribbean but persist in relative health here within the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park. The accessible 25-meter maximum depth and moderate currents make this a solid intermediate choice for divers moving beyond shallow beginner sites.

Marine Life

San Francisco Reef is an outstanding turtle site — the shallow elkhorn formations on the upper reef are prime grazing territory for hawksbill and green turtles, and sightings are nearly guaranteed. Spotted eagle rays cruise the deeper wall section. The reef’s healthy staghorn and elkhorn corals support a thriving population of butterflyfish and small wrasse species, as these corals provide ideal habitat structure. Large midnight parrotfish graze noisily on the coral — you may hear them before you see them. Caribbean reef sharks are occasional visitors from the deeper wall. Schools of yellowtail snapper and mahogany snapper aggregate in the water column above the reef.

Dive Profile

The standard approach begins at the reef crest at 5–10 meters, drifting through the elkhorn formations before descending to the wall section. The wall begins properly at around 12–15 meters, dropping to the maximum recreational depth of 25 meters. Spend the majority of bottom time at 15–22 meters on the wall face, then ascend to the upper reef for the final portion of the dive and safety stop. The northward drift carries divers naturally through the site.

Entry and Exit

Boat access from San Miguel; approximately 25–35 minutes. Mooring buoys throughout the national park zone. The proximity to San Francisco Beach means this area sees some boat traffic; SMB deployment is essential. Snorkellers from the beach operate in the shallows separately from the dive boats.

Tips

  • The upper reef elkhorn zone at 5–10 meters is as interesting as the wall — allocate time here on the ascent
  • Look for hawksbill turtles in the shallowest portion of the reef at the start and end of the dive
  • The elkhorn formations in the morning light create some of the most photogenic shallow images in Cozumel
  • This is an ideal site for practising the transition from reef to wall diving for intermediate divers
  • Combine with La Francesa or El Mirador for a full southern morning with complementary profiles

Safety

Fire coral is present on many structures, including the shallow elkhorn zone. The wall section requires attentive depth monitoring — the slope transition can lead to gradual deepening if not tracked. Moderate current at the wall edge demands an SMB for all ascents. Recompression facilities are in San Miguel, 25–35 minutes away.

Photography

The elkhorn coral formations at 5–10 meters are outstanding photographic subjects — the branching structures against Caribbean blue water with ambient natural light create compelling images. Turtle encounters in the shallows allow portrait-style approaches. The wall section offers classic wide-angle wall photography. Use the morning sun entering from the east to backlight the elkhorn formations for dramatic silhouette and rim-lit images.
