Passe de Céran - TAHAA

Passe de Céran is a drift dive on the eastern side of Taha’a, one of the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The pass is part of a shared lagoon system with Raiatea and is considered one of the area’s most rewarding dive sites, offering a current-assisted dive over a piton (pinnacle) structure covered in yellow coral, with reliable encounters of sharks, trevally, and barracuda.
Overview
Taha’a and Raiatea share the same large lagoon, which contains nine passes accessible to dive operators in the area. Céran Pass on the eastern side of Taha’a is among the most scenic, with two large pinnacles rising just off a ridge that leads to a larger seamount structure. The dive is conducted as a drift on incoming current, which funnels marine life through the pass. Excellent visibility is characteristic of the site. Te Mara Nui and other local operators run this site for advanced-level divers due to the depth and current requirements.
Marine Life
Bigeye trevally are a consistent presence in the pass, along with surgeonfish and impressive schools of barracuda. Whitetip reef sharks are regularly encountered along the pinnacles and reef edges. Large groupers and Napoleon wrasse (humphead wrasse) occupy the deeper seamount structure below the ridgeline. Angelfish inhabit the coral formations on the pinnacle faces.
Dive Profile
The dive begins at the pass entrance and follows the incoming current over the piton structure, descending to the larger seamount below. Maximum depth is approximately 25 metres. Advanced certification (PE 40 equivalent or similar) is required by local operators due to the depth and current conditions. Visibility on this site is reliably excellent.
Safety Considerations
Current strength varies with tidal flow. The dive requires experience in current diving and drift techniques. An SMB is essential. Operators time the dive to coincide with optimal current for marine life activity.
