Crystal Bay Dive Site

Crystal Bay is a sheltered, beginner-friendly reef bay near Gili Lawa Darat in northern Komodo National Park — a calm, pool-like site used for checkout dives and courses, with a sandy bottom, coral bommies, and resident sea turtles.

Overview

This Crystal Bay is located in northern Komodo National Park near Gili Lawa Darat island, not to be confused with the famous Crystal Bay on Nusa Penida (Bali), which is a different site entirely, some 400 kilometres to the west. The Komodo Crystal Bay is a protected bay whose topography creates sheltered, low-current conditions rarely found elsewhere in a park defined by its powerful tidal flows. The bottom is sandy with scattered coral bommies beginning in the shallows and extending to around 12–15 metres. Hard coral coverage on the bommies is reasonable, and the calm, clear water makes this an excellent site for divers still developing their buoyancy or completing their open water certification dives.

Marine Life

Sea turtles are the primary resident attraction, frequently seen resting on the bommies or cruising the sandy bottom. The coral bommies support a typical mix of damselfish, chromis, clownfish in anemones, and reef fish common across northern Komodo. The calm, clear water makes it easy to observe fish behaviour at close range without current management demands. No site-specific macro species have been independently documented here beyond general reef communities.

Dive Profile

Descend into the bay and navigate the coral bommies at 5–12 metres, spending time around each structure before exploring the sandy channels between them. Depth rarely exceeds 15 metres. The calm conditions make this ideal for extended bottom time and relaxed observation.

Entry and Exit

Boat access. Giant stride entry into calm water. Exit via ladder. The sheltered bay allows easy entry and exit in virtually all weather conditions.

Tips and Recommendations

• An ideal site for completing certification dives in calm, manageable conditions
• The clear water and good natural light make this excellent for underwater photography practice
• Combine with the nearby Crystal Rock or Castle Rock on the same day for a contrast between Komodo’s calm and advanced diving
• Good snorkelling alongside the dive due to the shallow, calm conditions

Safety Considerations

One of Komodo’s safest and most forgiving sites. The sheltered bay largely eliminates current as a concern. Standard buoyancy discipline applies around the coral bommies. Always carry an SMB as a best practice even in calm sites.
