Crystal Rock Dive Site

Crystal Rock is one of Komodo National Park’s most celebrated dive sites — a submerged pinnacle rising from deep water in the Gili Motang area that concentrates marine life in staggering numbers thanks to relentless nutrient-rich currents.

Overview

Crystal Rock is a submerged pinnacle in the northern sector of Komodo National Park, near Gili Lawa Laut, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The pinnacle tops out at roughly 3–5 meters below the surface and plunges to over 35 meters, its flanks carpeted in dense soft corals — orange, purple, and yellow sea fans spreading wide against the current. Strong upwellings funnel plankton over the rock, drawing vast schools of fusiliers, big-eye trevally, and sweetlips that swirl in shimmering columns. The diving is unambiguously advanced: currents can run at three knots or more, demanding good buoyancy control and the ability to hold position against the flow.

Marine Life

Schools of yellowfin and blue-and-gold fusiliers surround the pinnacle throughout the dive. Giant trevally and bigeye trevally patrol the current edge, while bumphead parrotfish lumber past in loose groups. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks are common below 15 meters, often resting on the sand or circling the base. Napoleon wrasse and large grouper occupy the deeper ledges. Sweetlips — both harlequin and oriental — gather in dense aggregations on the sheltered flanks. The soft coral coverage attracts nudibranchs and small critters, and pelagics including rainbow runners pass through on stronger currents.

Dive Profile

Descend quickly on the upstream side of the pinnacle to avoid being swept off. Work up-current along the base, then rise to the top where soft corals are thickest. Most divers do a circuit — one side on descent, the other on ascent — spending the safety stop in blue water as the current pushes you clear. Keep your deepest portion early and budget air carefully; it is easy to be so absorbed by the action that you overstay.

Entry and Exit

Access is by liveaboard or day-trip boat from Labuan Bajo. The skipper will position upstream of the pinnacle for entry. Giant stride into the current and descend immediately. After your safety stop, inflate your SMB and drift clear for pickup — do not attempt to swim back to the pinnacle against a strong current. The boat crew will follow your SMB.

Tips and Recommendations

• Time your dive with the incoming current — this brings the best fish activity and clearest water
• Carry a reef hook in case the current becomes too strong to hold position during the safety stop
• Arrive at depth quickly; lingering near the surface wastes both air and opportunity
• Wide-angle photography works best here — schools of fish with soft coral backgrounds
• Combine with Castle Rock on the same current window for a spectacular double-pinnacle day

Safety Considerations

Currents at Crystal Rock can be extreme, with sudden up-currents and down-currents along the pinnacle flanks. Divers who lose control can be swept deep or far from the boat. Always carry an SMB and whistle, and brief yourself on the abort procedure with the dive guide before entering. Not suitable for divers without significant drift diving experience. Always dive with a buddy and never separate at this site.

Photography

Crystal Rock is tailor-made for wide-angle work — shoot into the blue with schools of fusiliers backlit by sunlight pouring down from above, or frame soft coral fans against the current with a diver silhouetted behind. Early morning light creates dramatic shafts through the water column. A fisheye or 10–17mm lens captures the full drama of the pinnacle.
