Sabayor Kecil (“Small Sabayor”) is a reef dive site in the eastern Komodo National Park area, its sloping reef and exposed position producing moderate to occasionally strong currents that support good coral growth and regular reef shark and turtle encounters.
Overview
Sabayor Kecil is a small island in the eastern park area, its reef sloping from a shallow crest to approximately 28–30 meters on a combination of hard coral formations, rubble, and sand. The site is moderately exposed to tidal flow, making it suitable for intermediate divers with some current experience. The current is rarely as extreme as the park’s top-tier sites, giving Sabayor Kecil an accessible character while still delivering the nutrient-driven marine life productivity that defines Komodo diving. The reef edges and outer reef face are the most productive sections for fish and shark encounters.

Marine Life
Whitetip reef sharks are regular sightings at the reef base and on sandy patches, sometimes in small groups. Grey reef sharks have been recorded on stronger current days. Sea turtles — both green and hawksbill — are encountered throughout the dive. The reef fish diversity is strong: Napoleon wrasse, surgeonfish schools, and parrotfish graze the upper reef, while sweetlips cluster beneath overhangs at depth. Reef octopus are seen in rubble areas. Schools of fusiliers form in the current over the reef edge. The coral health is reasonable, with a mix of hard coral tables and branching formations.
Dive Profile
Descend to the reef base at 25–30 meters on the most sheltered side, working across the base and up through the mid-reef zone at 10–20 meters. The most current-exposed section of the reef edge is where shark activity is greatest — plan to spend time here before ascending to the shallower reef top for the safety stop.

Boat access. Giant stride entry. The guide positions the group based on current direction. Safety stop can often be made on the reef top; deploy SMB if drifting into open water.
Tips and Recommendations
- The reef base is the best area for shark encounters — arrive there promptly after descent
- Combine with Siaba Besar for a complementary turtle experience on the same day
- Wide-angle photography for reef shark and turtle subjects; macro for the rubble sections
- The site is a good choice for consolidating current-diving skills before attempting Tatawa Kecil or the northern pinnacles
- Check the sandy patches at the base carefully for resting sharks
Safety Considerations
Moderate currents are manageable but require active buoyancy management. Keep the group compact and follow the guide’s lead on positioning relative to the current. The reef corners may experience stronger flow — avoid being swept around exposed points. Always carry an SMB.

Sabayor Kecil suits a wide-angle setup for reef fish schools, shark shots, and turtle portraits. The good water clarity in the eastern park area creates clean backgrounds for blue-water silhouette work. The reef face at mid-depth with its coral coverage makes compelling reef landscape images.
