Bathalaamaagaa Kanthila
Location: North Malé Atoll (western rim), Maldives Depth: 10–32 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat
Overview
Bathalaamaagaa Kanthila is a prominent underwater pinnacle on the western edge of North Malé Atoll. “Kanthila” is the local term for a deep pinnacle or submerged rock formation that rises from significant depth. This site features a series of stacked rock formations draped in encrusting sponges, sea fans, and soft corals, with overhangs and ledges providing shelter for a range of reef and pelagic species.
Diving
The pinnacle descends to 32 m, and the dive typically covers both the upper structure and one or two of the deeper sections. Large gorgonian sea fans spread out from the walls in the 20–32 m range, and black coral trees are visible on the deeper sections. Nurse sharks use the overhangs and cave-like recesses as resting spots during daylight hours.
In current, the up-current side of the kanthila sees impressive action — schools of trevally and jacks hang in the flow, and grey reef sharks circle the structure at depth. Eagle rays and occasional Napoleon wrasse appear from the blue water beyond the pinnacle.
