Etheremadivaru house reef

Etheremadivaru house reef is the fringing reef of Etheremadivaru Island in North Male Atoll, a shallow and colourful wall dive celebrated as one of the best macro photography and underwater photography spots in the atoll.

Overview

The reef wraps around the island with a distinctive wall character despite its shallow maximum depth, featuring overhangs and undercuts draped in encrusting sponges, tunicates, and cup corals in vivid purples, yellows, and oranges. The wall is densely colonised at virtually every depth, with minimal bare substrate — a sign of exceptional reef health and low sedimentation. The shallow maximum depth of 12 meters allows exceptional bottom times, making this site a favourite for dive photographers who can spend extended periods hunting for nudibranchs, flatworms, and camouflaged critters on the reef face. Seahorses, ghost pipefish, and frogfish have been reported by regular visitors. The upper reef terrace supports turtle grazing and is often alive with schools of small reef fish. Despite the boat entry, the site is calm and accessible.

Marine Life

Nudibranchs, flatworms, ghost pipefish, seahorses, frogfish (occasional), hawksbill turtles, schools of small reef fish, moray eels, and exceptional encrusting growth — sponges, tunicates, and cup corals — on the wall face.

Tips for Divers

Bring a macro lens or close-up wet dioptre for the best photography opportunities. Move slowly along the wall and look carefully into crevices and on the undersides of overhangs for the most rewarding critter finds. The site is excellent for night dives, when the wall becomes active with hunting invertebrates and the encrusting growth fluoresces beautifully under blue light.
