Dhidhoo Corner (Out Reef)

Location: South Malé Atoll (southern tip), Maldives Depth: 5–25 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat

Overview

Dhidhoo Corner is an outer reef corner dive at the southern reaches of the atoll system, where the reef edge meets the open ocean. Corner dives in the Maldives channel current and concentrate marine life at the transition point between atoll interior and open sea. The out-reef designation indicates the dive is conducted along the exposed, ocean-facing side of the reef, where pelagic visitors are more likely to appear.

Diving

The dive follows the outer reef corner and the ocean-facing wall, descending to 20–25 m at the base where the reef gives way to sand and rubble. The wall is decorated with encrusting corals, sea fans, and sponges on the current-exposed faces. Grey reef sharks patrol the corner in characteristic patterns, and eagle rays appear in the deeper water off the wall edge.

The shallower reef top rewards a slower pace, with moray eels, triggerfish, and hawksbill turtles active in the coral formations. Larger bumphead parrotfish are sometimes seen on outer reefs in this southern part of the atoll, grazing on coral in impressive schools.

Marine Life

  • Grey reef sharks
  • Eagle rays
  • Hawksbill turtles
  • Bumphead parrotfish (occasional)
  • Moray eels and triggerfish

Practical Notes

The exposed position means conditions can be rougher than sheltered lagoon sites. Best dived in settled weather. Current can be strong on the out-reef corner — dive on the incoming tide for optimal conditions. Visibility typically 15–30 m on the outer reef.
