Neregando reef
Neregando reef is an outer reef site in Addu Atoll (Seenu Atoll) in the far south of the Maldives, recognised locally as one of the healthiest and most vibrant reef sections in the atoll — a testament to Addu’s relative remoteness and the reduced fishing pressure it has historically experienced.
Overview
Sitting along the outer rim of Addu Atoll near the equator, Neregando reef benefits from the upwelling nutrient-rich currents that sweep this southernmost Maldivian atoll. The reef face descends in a wall-like formation from 5 metres to around 25 metres, with an impressive diversity of coral species — Addu Atoll has recovered exceptionally well from bleaching events and Neregando is cited as one of the local highlights. Table corals, massive porite formations, and colourful soft corals compete for space on the wall, while the fish community includes species associated with pristine outer reef habitats: large sweetlips, grouper, barracuda, and schools of snappers. Sea turtles are a regular and unbothered presence here.

Diving Tips
- This reef rewards a slow, unhurried approach — the coral complexity is best appreciated by hovering at different depths along the wall.
- Turtles here are notably relaxed and allow close approach; maintain respectful distance and avoid chasing.
- Addu Atoll’s water can be slightly cooler (24–26°C) than northern atolls — bring a 3mm wetsuit.
- Combine with the SS British Loyalty wreck and other Addu sites for a multi-day diving itinerary in this unique southern atoll.
