Seafan
Seafan takes its name from the spectacular gorgonian sea fan colonies that dominate the deeper sections of this Addu Atoll reef. Located in the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, the site combines a healthy coral garden with the large fan formations that thrive in the nutrient-rich currents flowing through the atoll’s channels.
Site Conditions
- Depth range: 10–25 m
- Typical visibility: 20–30 m
- Currents: Moderate; generally manageable with good buoyancy
- Best season: November–April for northeast monsoon clarity
What to Expect
The defining feature of this site is the concentration of large orange and red sea fans at 18–25 metres, some spanning over a metre in diameter and perfectly positioned for photography against the deep blue backdrop of the outer reef slope. Pygmy seahorses have been reported on several of the larger fan structures, rewarding patient observers with a macro highlight. Above the fan zone, the reef slope supports dense hard coral formations, schools of fusiliers and anthias, and regular reef shark patrols. Addu Atoll’s southerly position and comparatively few dive operations mean fish life is less habituated and encounters feel more natural than at heavily dived northern sites.
Tips for Divers
Slow, careful buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging the fragile sea fan structures. A macro lens setup will capture the fine detail of pygmy seahorses and the invertebrates living on the fans. The moderate current at this site is typically manageable but can increase during mid-tide, so scheduling the dive for the last hour of the incoming or outgoing tide gives the best conditions.
