Bango

Bango is a wall dive off the northern coast of Bangka Island — the most remote of the major dive islands in Bunaken National Marine Park — where a near-pristine reef wall and low visitor numbers reward those willing to make the longer journey north from Manado.

Overview

Bangka Island lies at the northern edge of Bunaken National Marine Park, roughly 30 kilometres north-east of Manado city. It is significantly further from the main dive hub than Bunaken and Siladen islands, which means it is visited by a fraction of the divers who explore the park closer to Manado. Bango is one of the principal dive sites on Bangka’s coastline, offering a wall that has benefited from lower exploitation pressure and retains a density of large marine life that veteran divers describe as reminiscent of Bunaken in the 1980s.

The island’s remote position means it is primarily accessed by liveaboard vessels or the small resort operations based on Bangka itself.

What to Expect

The wall at Bango drops from a shallow reef crest at 4–6 metres to around 30–40 metres. The reef crest is covered in outstanding hard coral growth, with table corals of impressive size and branching acropora that remain structurally intact — a mark of limited physical disturbance. The wall face is richly decorated with seafans, soft corals, and large barrel sponges, and the absence of anchor damage or fin strike visible at busier sites is immediately apparent.

Green turtles are abundant, and their behaviour here is notably more relaxed than at heavily visited sites — they tend to move slowly and allow close approach. The deeper sections of the wall regularly produce whitetip and grey reef shark sightings. The reef fish community is dense: schools of surgeonfish, parrotfish, and fusilier are continuous throughout the dive, and the open water adjacent to the wall hosts regular trevally and occasional tuna activity.

Tips

The journey to Bangka Island is worth planning carefully — sea conditions in the channel between Bangka and Manado can be rough in the monsoon season. When conditions allow, combining Bango with other Bangka sites like Gorango in a day trip rewards the longer travel with a genuine off-the-beaten-path diving experience. Pack extra sunscreen; the surface intervals at Bangka are often in full sun with no shelter.
