Bualo

Bualo is a wall dive on the western perimeter of Bunaken Island, offering a moderately challenging dive with good coral coverage, regular turtle encounters, and the occasional pelagic surprise that characterises the island’s exposed western sites.

Overview

Bualo occupies a stretch of wall on Bunaken Island’s south-west coast, below the main cluster of north-west sites. It sits in a transitional zone between the very sheltered western sites near the village and the more exposed north-western sites like Tengah and Mike’s, inheriting some characteristics of each. Currents are moderate and manageable for intermediate divers, and the wall has a friendly profile that makes it accessible without being bland.

The site is not as frequently visited as the Lekuan series or Fukui Point, which gives it a slightly more natural character. Boat traffic is lighter and the fish behaviour tends to be less habituated than at the most heavily visited south coast locations.

What to Expect

The wall crest at Bualo sits at 5–7 metres, with the face dropping to 30 metres before meeting a sandy slope. The upper wall is covered in healthy hard coral, including large brain corals and branching formations. Soft corals and sponges colonise the steeper sections below 15 metres. Several large crevices cut through the wall between 10 and 20 metres, and these harbour lobsters, moray eels, and in at least one known location, a pair of banded pipefish that locals have reported on multiple dives.

Turtles are a reliable sighting, particularly on the reef crest where they feed on algae and soft coral. The site occasionally produces Napoleon wrasse sightings from the deeper sections of the wall, and groups of bumphead parrotfish have been recorded passing through the area in the early morning. The sandy bottom below the wall holds garden eels in the 25–30 metre range.

Tips

Bualo is a solid second or third dive option for divers based on the island who have already covered the headline south coast sites. The crevices in the wall mid-section are worth exploring slowly with a torch — they tend to reveal life that goes completely unnoticed on a first pass. Confirm with your guide whether a Napoleon wrasse is currently resident in the area, as sightings concentrate in certain predictable sections.
