Gorango

Gorango is a wall dive on Bangka Island in the northern reaches of Bunaken National Marine Park, known for a healthy coral wall, excellent macro life, and the kind of uncrowded conditions that are increasingly rare in Indonesian dive tourism.

Overview

Gorango lies on the southern coast of Bangka Island, facing toward the Bunaken and Siladen island group across the open water. The site is part of the same national park ecosystem as the famous Bunaken Island walls but operates in a geographic and commercial context that insulates it from heavy visitor traffic. Bangka Island has hosted small-scale dive resorts since the early 2000s, and Gorango is one of the sites most frequently cited by guests of these properties as a highlight of the northern park experience.

The wall here reflects the same exceptional marine biodiversity characteristic of the entire Coral Triangle region — the Indo-West Pacific hotspot where Bunaken National Marine Park sits.

What to Expect

The wall at Gorango drops from a reef crest at 5 metres to around 30 metres, transitioning to a sandy slope at depth. The upper reef crest is particularly rich, with healthy staghorn and table acropora corals providing complex structure for juvenile reef fish. The wall face below the crest is covered in encrusting corals, soft corals, and sponges, with a pronounced seafan garden between 15 and 25 metres.

Gorango is noted for its macro life — the site regularly produces nudibranchs in high diversity, pygmy seahorses have been reported on the larger seafans, and frogfish are periodically discovered on the wall face. Turtles are present, though they tend to be less concentrated here than on Bunaken’s south wall. Fish life is dense and varied: triggerfish, surgeonfish, and angelfish in multiple species are all resident. The reef’s relative isolation has allowed fish sizes to remain larger than at comparable heavily dived sites.

Tips

Gorango rewards thorough, slow diving rather than covering distance. The macro life here is the payoff — budget time to examine the seafans closely for pygmy seahorses and the encrusting sponges for nudibranchs.
