Likuan 3

Likuan 3 is the northernmost section of Bunaken Island’s famous Lekuan wall series, offering slightly calmer conditions than its neighbours and outstanding wall diving accessible to intermediate divers.

Overview

Where Likuan 1 and 2 are known for their intensity and depth, Likuan 3 provides a more relaxed introduction to Bunaken’s signature wall diving experience. The wall still drops sheer from 3–4 metres to well beyond recreational limits, but currents here tend to be more manageable, and the wall crest is rich and varied enough to keep less experienced divers occupied for an entire tank. Part of Bunaken National Marine Park, the site benefits from the same extraordinary biodiversity that defines the entire south-coast wall system.

What to Expect

The wall face between 8 and 25 metres is particularly dense at Likuan 3. Enormous table corals project horizontally from the wall, providing shelter for dense aggregations of glassfish and the predatory trevally that circle them. Large seafans in purples, oranges, and yellows create a spectacular backdrop in photographs. The wall has numerous chimneys and crevices where moray eels — including giant morays exceeding 1.5 metres — peer out from the shadows.

Turtles are consistently present, often feeding on algae and soft corals clinging to the wall face. Bumphead parrotfish occasionally pass through in schools of 20 or more, their excavating bite marks visible on the coral below. The shallow top of the wall is an excellent spot to end the dive — look for juvenile lionfish hiding among the coral rubble, flamboyant cuttlefish on sandy patches, and small schools of moorish idols drifting in formation.

Tips

Likuan 3 is often recommended as the starting point for divers new to Bunaken’s wall system. Its accessible conditions allow time to settle into correct buoyancy before attempting the more demanding sites. The site transitions smoothly into Panorama further along the wall, and guides sometimes combine both in a single drift dive when current allows.
