Muka Gereja

Muka Gereja — “church face” in Indonesian — is a shallow, beginner-friendly wall dive on Bunaken Island’s west coast, positioned in front of the island’s main church and offering some of the calmest conditions in the national park.

Overview

Muka Gereja sits on the western side of Bunaken Island in front of the village that holds the island’s church, hence its name. The site’s west-facing aspect provides excellent shelter from the south-east trade winds that characterise the main diving season, and the wall here is shallower and less vertical than the south-coast giants, making it one of the most forgiving introductions to Bunaken diving. Experienced divers also appreciate Muka Gereja for leisurely macro and photo dives, since the gentle conditions allow extended, unhurried time on the reef.

What to Expect

The wall at Muka Gereja runs from about 5 metres depth on the crest down to 25 metres before levelling onto a sandy slope. The upper reef crest is exceptionally rich in hard corals — enormous Porites bommies, branching acropora, and table corals create a complex three-dimensional habitat for reef fish. The wall face itself, while not as sheer as at Lekuan or Likuan, is well colonised by encrusting corals, sponges, and small seafans, and the reduced depth means excellent natural light throughout the dive.

Turtles are a consistent presence as at all Bunaken wall sites. The shallower profile makes turtle interactions more intimate — watching a hawksbill or green turtle hover at 8 metres in perfect visibility is a highlight the site regularly provides. Macro life here is rewarding: nudibranchs in multiple species, ornate ghost pipefish, and frogfish have all been recorded. The sandy bottom at 25 metres is worth checking for garden eels, which emerge from their burrows in the sand and sway in the current.

Tips

Muka Gereja is the ideal orientation dive for first-time Bunaken visitors — the conditions are forgiving, the reef is excellent, and it sets realistic expectations for the quality of diving throughout the park. Take time at the Porites bommies on the reef crest: they host extraordinary communities of invertebrates, fish, and crustaceans that reward slow, patient observation.
