Siladen 1

Siladen 1 is a wall dive on the western side of Siladen Island — a small uninhabited coral island northeast of Bunaken — where pristine reef walls, reliable turtles, and quieter conditions than the main Bunaken sites reward those who make the additional journey.

Overview

Siladen Island lies about 2 kilometres east of Bunaken Island and is entirely enclosed within Bunaken National Marine Park. The island is surrounded by walls on most sides, and Siladen 1 represents the western section of this system. Because Siladen’s resorts are few and day trip traffic from Manado typically focuses on Bunaken itself, the Siladen sites feel considerably less busy. This relative solitude, combined with wall diving quality that rivals anywhere in the park, makes Siladen 1 a favourite among repeat visitors and divemasters who want an alternative to the more trafficked Lekuan circuit.

What to Expect

The wall at Siladen 1 drops from a reef crest at 4–6 metres to around 35 metres, its face covered in healthy hard and soft coral growth. Large seafans are prominent in the 15–25 metre range, and the wall has numerous overhangs and ledge features that make the topography more interesting than a uniform vertical face. Green turtles are consistently present — Siladen’s walls are part of the same park ecosystem that makes Bunaken world-famous for turtle density — and they are often found resting undisturbed in small cavities in the wall.

Whitetip reef sharks are regularly spotted resting on sandy patches at depth, and a resident population of Napoleon wrasse patrols this side of the island. Siladen 1 is also notable for the density of smaller reef life: nudibranchs in multiple species, ornate ghost pipefish, and unusual flatworms add a macro dimension to what is primarily a wall dive. The reef crest, with its complex hard coral structure, is particularly rich in juvenile reef fish during the late dry season.

Tips

Siladen sites are best accessed as a dedicated trip from Bunaken resorts or Manado — the additional travel time is worth it for the reduced diver traffic alone. Guides with Siladen-specific knowledge know where the turtles tend to rest on this wall. The reef crest here is excellent for a thorough safety stop; bring a torch to examine the undercut sections just below the crest.
