Tengah

Tengah — “middle” in Indonesian — is a wall dive on Bunaken Island’s west side that lives between the calmer tourist sites and the more exposed northern sites, offering serious wall diving with a rich, undisturbed coral face.

Overview

Tengah occupies the mid-section of Bunaken’s western coast, positioned between the sheltered western sites near Fukui and the exposed north-western sites like Mike’s and Raymond’s. Its name reflects this geography. The wall here receives enough current to feed dense coral growth without the full force of the north-west swells, creating conditions that reward advanced divers who can manage moderate to strong current while appreciating an extremely healthy reef. Because it lacks the same name recognition as the Lekuan series or Fukui, Tengah tends to see fewer divers — a genuine advantage for those who find it.

What to Expect

The reef crest at Tengah sits at 5–8 metres and the wall drops vertically to 40 metres and beyond. The coral coverage on the wall face is notably pristine — large table corals, massive brain corals, and extensive fields of encrusting corals cover nearly every surface. Between 20 and 35 metres, the wall features prominent ledges where resting whitetip reef sharks and giant sleeping trevally are reliable sightings. Large barrel sponges emerge from the wall at depth, some old enough that their age is measured in decades.

The wall’s exposure to moderate current means the resident fish populations are well-fed and active. Dense schools of anthias swarm around the coral formations in the 10–20 metre range, and the transition between the wall face and the open water is often busy with schooling sweetlips, surgeonfish, and fusilier. Napoleon wrasse make regular appearances, and patient divers have reported occasional whale shark sightings in the open water during peak plankton season (April–May).

Tips

Tengah rewards divers who take time to examine the wall closely rather than cruising along it quickly. The barrel sponges in particular are worth inspecting — many harbour resident shrimps, crabs, and tiny blennies. Current direction at this site can shift during a dive, so maintain awareness of position relative to the wall throughout.
