Timur 2

Timur 2 — “East 2” — is the northern section of Bunaken Island’s east wall, a continuation of the Timur 1 wall system with a similar profile but slightly different marine life mix and the addition of a dramatic corner section where the reef wraps toward the north-east.

Overview

Timur 2 picks up where Timur 1 ends, continuing north along Bunaken Island’s east coast and eventually rounding the corner toward the north-east. This corner section, where the east and north-east walls meet, is the highlight of the dive — a prominent reef feature where current converges and marine life concentrates. Like its southern neighbour, Timur 2 sees less traffic than the south coast sites, giving it a more undisturbed quality that experienced divers appreciate.

The east coast wall system at Bunaken drops to depth very close to the surface — in places, the top of the wall is barely a metre below the waterline, creating dramatically vertical topography right from the entry point.

What to Expect

The wall at Timur 2 is characterised by very clean vertical faces, with minimal slope before the drop, and a complex mix of hard coral on the upper sections and soft coral, seafans, and barrel sponges lower down. Between 20 and 35 metres, the wall features larger overhangs and deeper crevices than Timur 1, providing more shelter for moray eels, lobsters, and resting nurse sharks.

At the corner section, where the east wall turns north-east, current influence increases and the marine life becomes more active and diverse. Schooling fish concentrate here: dense clouds of glassfish around coral bommies, schools of sweetlips in the 15–20 metre range, and fusilier in the upper water column. Whitetip and grey reef sharks are reliably present at depth at the corner. Turtles are abundant throughout, particularly in the shallower reef zone above the wall crest.

Tips

Timur 2 is a good follow-on dive from Timur 1 — the topography changes enough to keep the second dive interesting. The corner section is the destination; plan the dive to arrive there with 100–120 bar remaining to allow time to explore properly. Keep close to the wall as you approach the corner to avoid being pushed off by increasing current.
