Anita’s Garden is a coral garden reef site in Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia, named after a diver whose love of the site inspired the name.

Overview

Among Raja Ampat’s many personally named dive sites, Anita’s Garden is one of the more evocative: a lush coral garden that rewards the kind of slow, attentive diving that its namesake apparently practised. Located in the western Raja Ampat area near Misool or the Fam Islands, the site features exceptional soft coral development alongside healthy hard coral formations — a combination that creates a visually spectacular underwater landscape. The “garden” character means the site is characterised more by reef beauty and macro life than by big-fish action, though both are present. Visibility typically reaches 20-30 meters, and water temperatures average 27-29°C.

Marine Life

The coral garden habitat at Anita’s Garden supports extraordinary density and diversity of reef fish: anthias in clouds above soft coral branches, surgeonfish and parrotfish browsing the hard corals, and damselfish defending territory in the coral polyps. Clownfish in multiple anemone species are a highlight of the shallows. Seahorses are a realistic find in this habitat type — scan sea fans and soft coral branches carefully. Nudibranchs and flatworms are abundant on the encrusting growth. Turtles rest on the reef, and reef sharks make occasional passes at depth.

Dive Profile

This is a site designed for relaxed, exploratory diving. Descend to the reef top (5-8 meters) and spend time working across the coral garden, moving gradually deeper. The garden character extends from the shallows down to around 20 meters, below which the terrain transitions to slope. Allow at least 45 minutes of bottom time to properly explore the variety of corals and resident species. This site particularly rewards hovering and close observation rather than covering distance.

Entry and Exit

Access is by dive boat. Entry via giant stride or back roll into calm water near the reef top. Current conditions are typically mild at this site. Deploy SMB at 5 meters for boat pickup. The relaxed conditions make this a good site for longer safety stops and final air consumption.

Safety Considerations

Conditions at this site are generally benign, making it suitable for a wide range of divers. Nonetheless, carry an SMB, dive within your limits, and maintain buoyancy to protect the delicate coral. Mild currents may develop — check with your guide before the dive.

Anita’s Garden is an outstanding photography site across all formats. Wide-angle coral scenics capture the sheer colour and density of the garden. Macro work on coral surfaces yields nudibranchs, flatworms, seahorses, and tiny commensal crustaceans. The shallow depth and typically calm conditions allow extended natural-light shooting without strobe fatigue. Late-morning light through the water column produces beautiful results.
