Pretty Bush

Pretty Bush is a south side coral reef site on Utila, consistently recommended as one of the best destinations on the island for macro photography and small creature observation.

Overview

Pretty Bush sits on the south shore of Utila, where calmer, sheltered water conditions make it accessible to beginner divers on most days of the year. The reef starts at around 13 ft (4 m) and slopes down to approximately 100 ft (30 m) at the base. Rock formations and varied coral structures create a patchwork of micro-habitats particularly favourable for small Caribbean reef creatures. The site is frequently name-checked alongside Black Coral Wall as a macro photographer’s dream on the south side. Its relatively shallow accessible depths, benign current conditions, and close proximity to Utila’s harbour make it a reliable two-tank morning dive choice, especially when north side conditions are affected by swell.

Marine Life

While no exhaustive species inventory exists for this site, multiple sources cite Pretty Bush specifically for macro life — nudibranchs, small crustaceans, and juvenile reef fish in the rock and coral formations.
